Charles M. Ged
Bachelor of Science, 1986

Like many students, Charles (Chuck) Ged worked while attending classes at UNF. He studied chemistry and began working for JEA as a power plant chemist. Chuck graduated with a chemistry degree in 1986 and later became senior chemist and manager for the JEA Central Testing Lab. After graduation, Chuck returned to campus several times to teach the instrumental analysis lab for the Chemistry Department. In 1994 he started his own company, Advanced Environmental Laboratories (AEL), which provides environmental testing of soil and water samples. Over the years, Chuck's hard work resulted in the expansion of AEL and several other offices were added throughout the state, including Tampa, Orlando and Gainesville. Chuck serves as president and owner of AEL and holds memberships with the Florida Petroleum Marketers Association, First Coast Manufacturers Association and the American Chemical Society. We are proud to be able to recognize his accomplishments by naming him as this year's Outstanding Alumnus of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Coggin College of Business

Mary Biggs Knauer
Master of Business Administration, 1987

Since 1988, Mary Knauer has been well-known in the First Coast's banking and financial arena. Currently, Mary is the executive vice president and shareholder for Legacy Trust Company in Ponte Vedra Beach. Prior to her role at Legacy Trust, she was the managing director in Trust Administration for the North Florida office of First Union National Bank (now Wachovia Bank) and was responsible for managing a 21-person staff with emphasis on
default administration, sales and management.

A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designee, Mary also holds several professional licenses and designations including the Municipal Securities Representative (Series 52), Uniform Securities State Law (Series 63), and is a Certified Corporate Trust Specialist (CCTS) and a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA).

Mary's civic interests include a variety of non-profit and professional associations. At UNF, she serves on the UNF Alumni Association Board of Directors and was also a former chair and founding member of the Coggin College of Business Graduate Business Club. She is an instructor for the American Institute of Banking and serves on the Education Committee for the Florida Bankers Association. Mary also volunteers her time to serve on the boards of directors for the Children's Home Society, the Rotary Club of Jacksonville, the Florida Georgia Blood Alliance, the Buckner Foundation, and the Riverside Fine Arts Series. In addition to her MBA from UNF, Mary received a BA in English literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Francis (Frank) J. Mackesy
Bachelor of Business Administration, 1995
Master of Business Administration, 2000

Frank Mackesy is the undersheriff for the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Promoted to this position in January 2005 by Sheriff John Rutherford, this is the second highest position in the agency, where his duties include ensuring the sheriff's mission for the agency is properly carried out. Frank has varied experiences in the field of law enforcement and will complete 26 years of
service in April of 2005. He has earned every civil service rank attainable in the agency and has held several positions under former Sheriff Nathaniel Glover and current Sheriff John Rutherford. Since 2002 Frank's responsibilities have included overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Sheriff’s Office with respect to the Patrol Division, Detective Division, Community Affairs Division, Organized Crime Unit and the Intelligence Unit, as well as overseeing security for special events like the Super Bowl in February.

 

A graduate of the 190th session of the prestigious FBI National Academy, Frank has received numerous awards and honors that include the June 1986 Officer of the Month award, the June 1988 Officer of the Month award, the June 1988 Distinguished Officer and Dedicated Service award from the Riverside Optimist Club, the Outstanding Victim's Advocate award for the City of Jacksonville from the Mayor's Victim Assistance Advisory Council, 1999-2000 Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency and the 2002 Lynda Barco Community Service Award for outstanding victim advocacy from the Justice Coalition.

Michael Tanner
Bachelor of Business Administration, 1991
Master of Accountancy, 1994

 

Michael Tanner, a partner at CFO Services, is one of the key resources in the firm's Sarbanes Oxley compliance and internal audit area. He has also had a significant role in spearheading the development of the firm's internal audit and 404 practice deliverables and methodology. Mike's prior public accounting experience includes work on financial services, not-forprofits, telecommunications as well as manufacturing clients at the international accounting firm of Ernst & Young where he progressed through the ranks to senior manager.

Mike has also made significant commitments to his community. For the past eight years, he has served on the UNF Alumni Association Board of Directors, holding various committee chair positions including Resource Development and Governance. He is a past chair of the Coggin College of Business' Graduate Business Club Steering Committee and was president of the inaugural College of Business Alumni Chapter. Mike’s professional associations include a long-term role as a board member for the Insurance Accounting and Systems Association where he also served as president for two terms and received the International Volunteer of the Year award in 2003 from the IASA. He has also provided volunteer services to American Heart Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Jacksonville Association of Corporate Growth, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and others.

Philip Mobley
Bachelor of Science, 1975

Philip Mobley is a native of Lake City, Florida. After graduating with a degree in mathematic and computer science, Phil was hired at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida (BCBSF). He started as a junior programmer working with human resource systems. Since then he has worked on every major application at BCBSF. In addition to leading a staff of IT professionals, he has led many major projects such as the
implementation of the PeopleSoft Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems and automation of the Blues National Accounts Interplan Telecommunication System. In 2002 Phil earned his MBA from Jacksonville University. Currently he is a director in the Information Technology area where he and his team manage applications and projects.

Phil is the immediate past president of the University of North Florida Alumni Association. He is an active member of the BCBSF Global Diversity Council and chairs the Information Technology Division's Diversity Business Council. Phil is also a board member of The
National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ).

As an Elder for the Northside Church of Christ, Phil has served in many capacities over the past 28 years, including youth minister, director of technology and a board member of the church's non-profit organization, Northside Community Involvement Inc. Phil's passion is encouraging and helping young people to find their real potential. He has conducted technical workshops to disadvantaged youth such as NASA's Mathematic and Science Academy conducted at Edward Waters College. Over the years, Phil has positively affected the lives of thousands of young people and we are honored to recognize him as an Outstanding Alumnus.

William C. “Bill” Mason III
Doctorate in Educational Leadership, 2002

Dr. William C. “Bill” Mason III is currently the executive director of the Foundation for Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Bill has had a distinguished career in healthcare administration that spans 40 decades including leadership as the former chair of the Board of Baptist/St. Vincent's Health System. Bill has also held numerous community leadership posts including service as the current chair of the JAXPORT Board of Directors and board chair of the Jacksonville Regional Chamber of Commerce in 2000.

A native of Montgomery, Alabama, Bill received his undergraduate degree from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette and his master's degree in health administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. Bill began his health care career at USAID and served in Vietnam and Kenya where he developed hospitals for the civilian population. He continued his international experience as CEO of the Baptist Hospital in Tanzania and the Baptist Medical Center in Bangalore, India.

In 1978, Bill returned to the U.S. as the administrator of the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville and was promoted to president and CEO in 1983. He helped transform Baptist into a four hospital system. When it became the Baptist/St. Vincent's Health System in 1995, Bill served as the first president and CEO.

William Edward (Ed) Pratt-Dannals
Master of Education, 1981

Mr. William Edward “Ed” Pratt-Dannals received his bachelor's degree from Georgia State University in 1973. After moving to Jacksonville in 1975, he served as a math teacher and a coach for several years at John Gorrie Jr. High.

Since graduating from UNF in 1981, Ed has served the Duval County School District in roles of increasing responsibility. From 1981-1984 he served as vice principal at Lakeshore Jr. High and Englewood High School. From 1984-1997 he provided leadership as principal of Fort Caroline Jr. High, Baldwin Jr./Sr. High, Robert E. Lee High and Stanton College Preparatory.

In 1997 Ed was promoted to the position of regional superintendent for Region I in Duval County. His responsibilities in this role included assisting 33 schools spanning grades K-12 in the lowest income areas of Jacksonville. In 2002, Ed became the regional superintendent for Region IV, which serves 35 schools spanning grades K-12. In 2003 he became the associate superintendent of curriculum and instructional services for Duval County. In this role, Ed assists the regional superintendents, and he helps coordinate school leadership development efforts. Ed actively supports and participates in partnerships between UNF and
Duval County Public Schools, particularly the urban professional development schools.

College of Health

Ann Hanawalt Van Ormer
Master of Science in Health, 1982

Ann Hanawalt Van Ormer has made a lasting commitment to healthcare in Jacksonville and the State of Florida since receiving her master of science in health from UNF in 1982. She is a well-known health education speaker, medical writer, and lecturer. Her career is diverse and includes running a continuing education company for healthcare professionals, serving as adjunct faculty at FCCJ and the University of Phoenix, and serving as the director of nursing at both Memorial Medical Center and St. Vincent's Medical Center. She is a member of multiple professional organizations and has received numerous awards. These include Who's Who in American Nursing, and being the recipient of the Great 100
Nurses of Northeast Florida Award. She currently volunteers at Community Hospice, Holy Family Catholic Church, and the National Kidney Foundation. Ann was also a charter member of UNF's Women and Girls Health Initiative.

Gary Jarvis
Bachelor of Arts, 1984
Master of Science in Health, 1985

Dr. Gary Jarvis serves as the director of Brooks Health System’s biofeedback clinic. He earned his bachelor of arts with a specialization in psychology from UNF in 1984 and his master of science in health in 1985. Gary received his Ph.D in neurophysiology from Columbia Pacific University. He has served for the past three years as a member of the UNF Institutional Review Board (IRB), which is charged with ensuring the protection of human subjects in research. Gary's contributions to the IRB have included attending monthly meetings and reviewing proposals in his spare time. He not only serves on the UNF IRB, he is also an active Shriner member and has been featured in the Florida Times- Union as Santa Claus, delivering gifts to children from his motorcycle. For giving back to UNF and for his community service, the College of
Health is proud to recognize Dr. Gary Jarvis.

Teri Coutu
Bachelor of Science in Health, 1999

Teri Coutu has made a lasting impact in the field of health education and wellness. She is currently employed as a program manager by the Northeast Florida Area Health Education Association. Teri's professional activities include serving as the president of the Florida Association of Public Health Educators and as the journal editor of the Florida Chapter of the Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Teri is truly dedicated to UNF. She serves on the College of Health alumni board and chaired the first-ever Health Education Symposium. She also mentors our students and advises the Eta Sigma Gamma Honor Society. The College of Health is honored to recognize Teri Coutu for her service to the University, community, and state.

Division of Continuing Education

Issis Richter
Completion: 2 levels of English Language Instruction
Bachelor of Arts, 2001

Issis is an alumna of the English Language Program in the Division of Continuing Education and an alumna of the University of North Florida. She is currently employed by Citibank in the E-Business User Experience Department working on translation projects. When she arrived in the United States from Costa Rica in the spring 1999 semester, she had intermediate level English language skills. Issis was anxious to learn English and enter the communications program at UNF. After graduation, She joined the English Language Program as an instructor, teaching conversational Spanish to registrants from the community who want to learn or improve their Spanish conversation skills. Issis has written and compiled materials for
Spanish texts used in these classes.

Issis also has created a community outreach for the UNF Spanish conversation classes. To date she has taught Spanish on-site for several companies in the Jacksonville community. For each particular job request, she has written customized Spanish materials to enhance human resource training for these companies. She continues to be an important asset to the UNF English Language Program, Continuing Education and the Jacksonville community
