Coggin College of Business

John R. Barrett
Bachelors in Business Administration, 1973

John Barrett is among the University’s first graduates and his determination to get his degree is characteristic of many UNF alumni: he completed his bachelor degree in accounting in 1973 while working two part time jobs and taking 20 credits per semester. One of these part time positions was with United Parcel Service (UPS), the company that he went on to serve successfully on a very full time basis – thirty years in fact. His abilities, drive and adaptability were rewarded with expanded responsibilities. He was selected for transfer to growth areas for UPS, first as district manager for Montana (1986-1988) then as district manager for TexMex (1988-1995) and then returned to Jacksonville as the North Florida district manager (1995-2002).

Upon his return to Jacksonville, Mr. Barrett became active volunteer and loyal supporter of his alma mater, specifically getting involved with UNF Athletics. He is on the Osprey Club Executive Board, currently serving as vice president and treasurer. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of students, taking primary interest in student athletes and Coggin College of Business undergraduates. Mr. Barrett funds multiple scholarships, including travel support for international study. He has been influential in raising funds for the athletic department. His wife, Jaye Barrett, is equally supportive of UNF, consistently attending University sporting events and activities. Their daughter Jayme is a UNF student.

Sidney D. Roberson
Bachelors in Business Administration, 1994

Skilled, talented and determined describe Sid Roberson no matter which facet of his life is considered. As a scholar athlete at UNF, Mr. Roberson garnered multiple accolades as a collegiate and professional baseball player, including being selected as the NAIA National Player of the Year, being selected as a finalist for the Dick Howser award, baseball’s Heisman equivalent, as well as being drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers. The same year that he earned his bachelors degree with highest academic honors, he became Pitcher of the Year for the team’s Texas League. In his big league debut for the Brewers, he posted a 6-4 win/loss record. Sid clearly knows what it means to succeed.

Only back to back rotator cuff surgeries could derail his triumphs on the mound. Mr. Roberson retired from professional baseball in 1998 due to injury. While professional baseball lost an already accomplished player, the financial services industry became the beneficiary.

An accounting major at the Coggin College of Business, Mr. Roberson adapted his winning ways for Morgan Stanley, where he began as a financial advisor. For the next two years the National Sales Director Award was bestowed on Mr. Roberson in recognition of his outstanding performance. He became sales manager and vice president for the Jacksonville complex, which includes the markets of Ponte Vedra, St. Augustine, and St. Simons Island. He is now also branch manager for Ponte Vedra Beach. Mr. Roberson earned Morgan Stanley’s designation as a wealth advisor, a title held nationally by just 5 % of advisors. He is a member of both the Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville Chambers of Commerce.

Ever since graduation, Mr. Roberson has remained active with his alma mater, supporting the ever-growing tradition of UNF baseball success. More recently, he has become involved in advancing the education of Coggin College’s finance majors, particularly in providing practical learning opportunities to augment traditional curricula. Mr. Roberson has engaged the expertise of his Morgan Stanley colleagues to the students’ advantage and he now serves on the Board of Advisors of OIG. His history of success carries over to this volunteer service: the OIG is ahead of the benchmark and has grown 27.2 % in 15 months.
